We were relieved when the Rockport Select Board wisely voted 4-1 on February 8 to table the draft “Ordinance to Regulate Short-Term Rental Property” and not place it on the June ballot. This ordinance would hurt our businesses and local economy which rely heavily on summer tourism. It will also hurt the vitality of the Village, where several of us not only operate our businesses, but also live. We understand that 34 residents recently filed a petition seeking to circumvent the Select Board’s vote and as a result, the Board is now considering a proposal to place a nonbinding vote on short term rental regulation on the June ballot instead. We believe the Select Board got it right the first time and should stay the course. ....
Birmingham workshop series allows deep dives into city issues Hometownlife.com The City of Birmingham will kick off a new workshop series during the first city commission meeting of each month as needed beginning March 8. The workshops will begin at 6 p.m., immediately before regularly scheduled city commission meetings. The workshop March 8 will explore future opportunities at the Birmingham Ice Sports Arena. Specific topics to be discussed include: 1) explore pros and cons of using an enterprise fund; 2) discussion about the Birmingham Ice Sports Arena renovation/addition design review with Robert Stempien from Plante Moran Cresa; and 3) deep dive into potential revenues generated by the Birmingham Ice Sports Arena. ....
Time to crack down on short-term rentals abuses Last summer, multiple Paradise Valley police units responded to a wild party at a single-family home registered to a corporation. Most of the 300 attendees were impaired – many were intoxicated and on various illicit drugs. Some were heavily armed. It was a dangerous and dire situation for the neighbors and for the town’s small police force, and the home suffered about $400,000 in damages before officers were able to shut it down. While this incident stands out for the scale and significance of the damages involved, it is unfortunately not a unique story in Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, Page, Fountain Hills, Sedona, Phoenix, and other communities across Arizona, where neighborhoods are forced to deal with negative impacts – both large and small – from short-term rentals. ....
UPDATE In talking with Rockport citizen Doug Cole this morning, Feb. 22. he said it wasn’t a secret that he is one of the original creators of a petition to get the short-term rental ordinance on Rockport’s June Town Meeting ballot. “I had the energy to get it started,” he said. “I have very strong feeling that town voters get an opportunity to vote this up or down, and to keep it off the ballot is a voter-supression type of thing,” he said. “I don’t have a strong feeling either way about the ordinance itself, but want it to go before the voters. It just seems to be the right thing to do.” ....
