Rent hits record $550pw: Tauranga tenants lower standards, group together, to get rentals

Tenants desperate to find a rental are lowering their standards or grouping together to share accommodation with family and friends just to get a roof over their heads, experts say.
Some were also paying more
than $650 a week, leaving very little for necessities such as food, power and clothing and were avoiding paying bills on time to be able to afford to eat.
The news comes as the Bay of Plenty s median weekly rent has hit an all-time high of $550.
Tauranga s median weekly rent is even higher than the region s median at $565, while Rotorua s sits at $470. ....

Supplying free period products in schools should have happened years ago and will go a long way to reducing the shame and increased absences associated with period poverty, a Rotorua principal says.
Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern and Associate Education Minister Jan Tinetti announced yesterday that from June, all primary, intermediate and secondary school and kura students would have access to free period products.
The announcement follows a successful Access to Period Products pilot programme, which has been running since Term 3 last year in 15 schools and kura in the Waikato region. ....

TAMPA — The latest numbers from the Center for Disease Control show Florida has at least 416 confirmed cases of the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant, also known as the highly contagious UK strain.
That’s more than twice as many as California, the state with the next highest case count.
Experts say, those numbers likely aren’t accurate because Florida is only sequencing every few hundred tests to look for different strains. ....

But faith-based organizations are increasingly stepping in to help repair these natural spaces. In many cases, religious leaders have become environmental influencers, championing nature-based solutions that experts say are crucial to saving the ecosystems that underpin human society.
“Faith communities – motivated by spiritual values and driven by an ethical responsibility – wield enormous social and political influence when it comes to promoting action to restore ecosystems,” says Iyad Abumoghli, Director of the Faith for Earth Initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). ....
