Country Music Memories: Waylon Jennings Dies in Arizona

Nineteen years ago today (Feb. 13, 2002) was a sad day in country music: It was on that date that Waylon Jennings died, from complications from diabetes. He was 64 years old.
Jennings was born near Littlefield, Texas, and inherited his love of music from his mother. When he was eight years old, he began playing the guitar, and by the time he was 12, Jennings had his own weekly radio show on local station KVOW. At age 16, Jennings dropped out of school and took a series of odd jobs while focusing on his music career. He began working as a DJ for KVOW, where he also performed on air. ....

Sixty-two years ago today on February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and Ritchie Valens, died tragically in a plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa while on their Winter Dance Party Tour.
Buddy Holly was 22-years-old, The Big Bopper 28-years-old, and Ritchie Valens only 17-years-old.
“When the plane crashed and people call it the day the music died, of course the music didn’t really die. The Beatles came and rock-n-roll exploded again but symbolically that time and place will never happen again and the innocence where Ritchie, Buddy, and J.P. are forever frozen in the 50’s,” said co-producer of the docuseries “The Winter Dance Party Tapes” Sevan Garabedian. ....

February 3, 1959: The Day the Music Died

On February 3, 1959, a plane crashed shortly after taking off from Clear Lake, Iowa, killing all four people aboard: pilot Roger Peterson and musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. The Big Bopper Richardson. The date became known as The Day the Music Died.
