A worldwide pandemic didn’t stop Polk County students from pursuing their goals, and once again The Ledger adjusted to honor those students in a non-traditional way.
The Ledger held an online presentation Friday to reveal winners of the 45th annual Silver Garland Awards. It is the second consecutive year that the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented the traditional awards ceremony to be held in person.
The Silver Garlands is the longest-running and most prestigious awards program for high school students in Polk County. The awards, not intended as a talent contest or a scholastic competition, recognize students for service to their schools and their communities. ....

This year marks the 75th year since his birth, but it was only by the slimmest of margins that he didn’t end up an obscure, dead teenager long before his notable life and notorious death unfolded. WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A Winter Haven High student was airlifted to a nearby hospital after she was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning near a bus stop.
Polk County deputies described the 15-year-old s injuries as serious, but she is expected to be OK. Winter Haven police initially said she was riding a bicycle when the crash occurred at Avenue G NW and 22nd Street NW. However, deputies said it s unclear if she was on a bicycle.
Officials said the teen was crossing the street toward the bus stop when she was struck by a vehicle with an 18-year-old driver behind the wheel. Investigators said the driver was on his way to work and didn t see her. ....

Mrs. Sikes passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, at her residence.
Mrs. Sikes was the daughter of Rufus and Euna Kirby. Born in 1930 in Wehadkee on a farm, she grew up knowing her grandmother and cousins. She worked hard and always enjoyed nature. She attended Big Springs High School and played basketball there. She lived briefly with her family in Winter Haven, Fla., attending Winter Haven High School.
She returned to Wehadkee and graduated from Handley High School in the class of 1948. She married Herbert Stanley Sikes, a proud young U.S. Marine. Wyoleen lived in Atlanta working for the Atlanta Gas Light Company when Sherry was born while Stanley was fighting in Korea. She lived in Beaufort, S.C., when Mike was born and Stanley was stationed at Camp Lejeune as an instructor. Wyoleen lived in Tustin, Calif., where Joe was born while Stanley was stationed at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. ....
