To help patients on the autism spectrum, Mount Sinai South Nassau has partnered with RVC Blue Speaks, a Rockville Centre-based grassroots autism charity that raises funds for related genetic research, support programs, and community initiatives.
RVC Blue Speaks donated $15,000 to support Mount Sinai South Nassau’s expansion of its Child Life Program, including its new acquisition of the Vecta System Sensory Station. With this specialized equipment, medical teams can help patients with special needs feel more at ease when arriving in the emergency department. The hospital also hired additional Child Life staff, which was funded in part through a grant from RVC Blue Speaks, and established a mandatory training program to educate emergency department staff in tactics and techniques to communicate with patients and build their understanding of the special needs of the patients and their families. This education is now incorporated into the hospital’s new-employee orientation.

This year our community partners had to adapt as much as faculty to changed circumstances. They had to go remote with us, offering remote feedback, engagement and activities. They had to consider whether an internship or project could even be done remotely, redesign entire projects and, in some cases, manage COVID protocols and precautions to allow students to participate directly. We conceived of this COVID-era version of our community partner award while debriefing the semester with Mary Val Palumbo in Nursing. Mary Val was raving about a particular community partner, who had just really taken it on herself to help students complete their service-learning activities. Thanks to the following partner — and the professor's story of her work — we opened the nominations and are privileged to recognize these 10 partners for continuing to work with us during the pandemic.

Stripes® Stores raised $197,000 through its in-store charitable fundraising campaign for Driscoll Children’s Hospital to benefit the children and youth of South Texas.
Due to COVID-19, the Driscoll Children’s Hospital campaign, which usually takes place in April, took place in November 2020. The funds benefited Driscoll Children’s Hospital specialty clinics in Corpus Christi, Victoria, the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Eagle Pass, and Del Rio.
Driscoll’s Child Life Specialists help decrease stress and anxiety felt by children and families during their hospital experience, which starts with creating a place just for them. The Stripes Child Life playroom and teen lounge offer a place for children, teens and families to enjoy a sense of normalcy. The 12 specialists and four assistants provide procedural support and often use play as a coping strategy to assist patients.
