On Republic Day, Gautam Khaitan remembers great-grandfather, an architect of Indian Constitution


While lauding the stalwarts of the Indian Constitution-making process, managing partner of OP Khaitan & Co, Gautam Khaitan remembers one of his great-grandfathers Devi Prasad Khaitan as the vanguard of the Indian legal profession this Republic Day.
An illustrious lawyer and prominent statesman, DP Khaitan enjoyed the rare honour of being one of the architects of the Indian Constitution.
A pioneer of modern Indian law, DP Khaitan was born on August 14, 1888. He graduated first class in Law from the prestigious Presidency College of Calcutta along with some of the most brilliant minds that included Rajendra Prasad, Badridas Goenka and JN Mazumdar among others. At a time when discrimination was at its peak, it was difficult for him to kickstart his career with a British firm. Consequently, he joined Manuel and Agarwalla. ....

No prime minister had made the kind of faithful gesture that Modi did on his maiden visit to the Parliament on May 20, 2014 – it was ostensibly a public display of his respect for the highest representative body even before he assumed the office of the prime minister.
His government since then has made many shows of its regard for the apex legislature of our nation. It relentlessly talked about minimum government and maximum governance, started celebrating Constitution Day on November 26, and attempted to appropriate BR Ambedkar, the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly. While laying the foundation stone of the new Parliament building last December, Modi eloquently talked about India’s vibrant democracy and hoped that India would be hailed as the mother of democracy. ....
