The United States, a Group 1-winning brother to the high-class fillies Hermosa and Hydrangea, got his stud career off to the dream start on Saturday when Drakenstein Stud s two-year-old homebred filly Sheela made a winning debut in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes at Vaal in South Africa.
The filly is out of Trip To India, a Listed-placed daughter of leading South African sire Trippi hailing from the family of European Group 1 winners such as Continent, who struck in the July Cup and Prix de l Abbaye, and Grand Prix de Paris scorer Zambezi Sun.
The globe-trotting son of Galileo began his racing career with Aidan O Brien and the Coolmore partners, for whom he won the Group 3 KPMG Enterprise Stakes. At four he transferred to the Australian stable of Robert Hickmott to race for Melbourne Cup-winning owners Nick and Lloyd Williams.

American Pharoah notched his third top-flight winner, and first on dirt, when his son Cafe Pharoah claimed the Grade 1 February Stakes at Tokyo on Sunday. The US-bred four-year-old was adding to his two Grade 3 victories, having won the Unicorn Stakes and the Sirius Stakes last year.
Jockey Christophe Lemaire tracked the leaders aboard the powerfully-built bay, and having hit the front entering the final furlong, Cafe Pharoah ran on strongly to deny the fast-finishing Air Spinel, a son of King Kamehameha, by three-quarters of a length. His condition was super and I had confidence already in the paddock, said Lemaire. We decided to use cheekpieces hoping for a more aggressive performance. His start was good, we were positioned well and he responded beautifully. The colt has such high potential. I had no doubt that he could land a Grade 1 win if he gave his best. I’m happy that it all worked out today.

Volkswagen Group strengthens quality assurance â Frank Welsch to lead the new unit
Herbert Diess: The traditionally high quality standards of our vehicles, combined with the digital customer experience, are now more critical to success than ever before. We are strengthening our cross-brand quality management, thus responding to the growing requirements arising from digitalization and e-mobility. In Frank Welsch, we will have an experienced vehicle expert and engineer at the helm of Group Quality Assurance. This new key function is now in excellent hands. Among other positions, Welsch was Head of Development at SAIC VOLKSWAGEN in China, at Å KODA in the Czech Republic and at Volkswagen Passenger Cars in Wolfsburg. To ensure a consistent quality level, the quality assurance heads of the brands will in future also report to Welsch in a functional capacity.
APAL Post-harvest Seminar goes online to explore smart packhouse
APAL’s Post-harvest Seminar on Wednesday 20 January 2021 will be delivered entirely online as COVID-19 and border restrictions continue to create uncertainty for apple and pear growers across the nation.
APAL Industry Services Manager Justin Smith said APAL and industry had been hopeful of returning to onsite delivery at Montague’s new state of the art facility at Narre Warren next week, but had moved to online to ensure there were no barriers to the event.
“To put it simply, we are really excited by the content and we don’t want uncertainty about border restrictions or quarantine requirements to get in the way of our members being part of this important event,” said Justin. The online event is now free to all attendees and will feature a virtual tour of Montague’s new retail space “The Orchard” and production facilities.
