As waste leaches from B.C. coal mines, experts worry rules will fall short

Teck Coal was ordered to pay a record $60 million fine this year for polluting waterways in the Elk Valley, but despite the penalty, contaminants continue to leach from piles of waste rock at the company’s mines and the clock is ticking on new federal regulations that observers say are long overdue.

Monitors doubt mining company's water fixes

As Teck Resources hopes to expand its mountaintop-removal coal mining in British Columbia, water quality monitors in Canada and the United States warn the company’s existing mines already cause significant ecological damage.
In 2019, the company’s own research revealed that more than 90% of the cutthroat trout population had vanished in a 60-kilometer (37-mile) reach of the Upper Fording River near its mines around Sparwood, British Columbia.
On March 26, Teck pleaded guilty to two counts of illegally discharging selenium and other pollutants into the watershed and paid a $60 million fine — the largest of its kind in Canadian history.  ....

Canadian coal company pays $60M for environmental damage


MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — A Canadian coal company has paid a $60 million fine after pleading guilty in federal court involving pollution discharges blamed for killing most fish in nearby waters in Canada and harming fish downstream in Montana and Idaho.
Investigators in Canada found Teck Resources Limited discharged hazardous amounts of selenium and calcite into the Fording River from two coal mines north of Eureka, Montana, the Missoulian reported Sunday.
Investigators also said some selenium was connected to fish damage in Montana s Koocanusa Reservoir and the Kootenai River, resulting in new water quality standards last year imposed by the state Board of Environmental Review. ....

EPA OKs selenium rule while senator tries to revoke it

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency adopted a new standard for selenium waste in Montana’s Kootenai River and Koocanusa Reservoir on Thursday, after the Legislature dropped plans to revoke the state rule.
“EPA’s action is based on a thorough technical review of the State’s submission and a determination that the adopted standards are based on sound science and consistent with the Clean Water Act,” EPA spokeswoman Laura Flynn Jenkins wrote in an emailed statement.
“Montana’s revised standards will strengthen ongoing efforts to address selenium concerns in surface waters, fish and aquatic life within the Kootenai River watershed.” ....
