One couldn’t ask for a better person for the Australian of the Year gong than well-deserving Grace Tame, the first Tasmanian to receive one (“Change the date, says Grace”, January 26). She is not going to muck around. In the little time she’s been in the public eye, Tame has already said what most of us feel — change the Australia Day date. I can’t wait to hear her views in the days ahead. Congratulations, Grace.

Delighted to see such an eclectic mix of women who have taken out the top Australia Day honours this year. These women are true embodiment of the saying of Australia’s Patron Saint Mary MacKillop — “never see a need without doing something about it”. ....

“My mother was five when they literally grabbed her from her mother’s arms,” Marrawarra and Barkindji man Brendan Kerin tells SBS News.
“From there, they spent two weeks in a jail cell and then they were all shipped to Cootamundra Girls Home.”
Aboriginal girls in the New South Wales home were alienated from their families. When they became teenagers, they were sent out as servants to work in white households.
Brendan s mother’s story is tragic but it is strikingly similar to his own.
“I was born at Crown Street Women’s Hospital in Surry Hills in 1971 and I was taken away from my mother in that hospital and I never saw her again,” he says. ....

10 things you should know about slavery in Australia

Source: Treaty Republic
Much like the words ‘invasion, ‘theft’, massacres’, and ‘wars’, Australia appears uncomfortable using the word slavery in reference to its own history. Blackbirding, Stolen Wages, indentured service, indentured labour; are all words that have been used to avoid the harsh bite of the word. However, the realities of these words have always been much the same; unpaid labour, unsafe working conditions, exploitation, abuse, and decades long campaigns for justice and recognition - many of which are still ongoing. This is a significant relationship between Indigenous and white Australians.  ....

The Target stores changing to Kmarts

15th Jan 2021 4:15 PM
More than 50 Target stores are expected to be closed over the coming months, while dozens will be converted into Kmart outlets in a major retail shake-up.
News of the shrinking Target estate broke last year after sales slumped by $67 million, but many of the changes are happening in 2021.
