Class, democracy and equality

Class, democracy and equality
May 1, 2021
Since 1890, workers across the world have been commemorating ‘May Day’ to pay tribute to the martyrs of Chicago who sacrificed their lives in the struggle to achieve 8 hours working day.
In 1886, in the American city of Chicago, unarmed protesting workers demanding an eight-hour working day were met with brutal force. May Day continues to symbolise the fight for the eight-hour day.
Often, the ruling class, capitalist media and intellectuals accuse the working class for resorting to violence to achieve their demands but history shows us it is actually the other way round.
It is really the capitalist class that resorts to violence to suppress the working people. As the events in Chicago proved, peaceful protest was met with brutal state force. ....

Mason City May Day event aims to elevate workers, focus on local labor efforts

When the Mason City Trades and Labor Assembly received its official charter from the American Federation of Labor on Oct. 8, 1915, the document was signed by then AFL President Samuel Gompers.
At that point, the London native had been the organization s head since 1886 when it arose out of the former Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions.
That very same year, on May 4, in Chicago, at Haymarket Square, a workers strike for an eight-hour work day descended into chaos when an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at police who had killed a person the day prior while breaking up a strike at a local machine company. After the bomb went off on May 4, gunfire rang out and at least 11 people were killed (seven police and four civilians). Steadily, in the years after that, May 1, May Day, began to be marked as International Workers Day.  ....

A brief history of International Workers Day

While the United States does not celebrate International Workers Day, events from the US labor movement inspired the Marxist International Socialist Congress to chose May 1st for their day of action. In 1890, in Paris, the Marxist International Socialist Congress chose ....

Celebrating May Day | Policy Matters Ohio

Working people have proved time and again that when they join together in a union, they have the power to win better pay, better working conditions and a chance at a decent life. Organized labor won the broadly shared prosperity that in the 20th century became synonymous with the American way of life. Today, as corporations resist union organizing and consolidate power, work must be done to restore lost progress, and to ensure that this time, Americans of color fully share in the gains they have been blocked from, as the wealthy few used race to divide working people. This Saturday, for International Workers’ Day more commonly known as May Day we commemorate the struggle and sacrifice of working people who built that movement and won the 40-hour week through decades of struggle, and we anticipate future victories that include all working people, no exceptions. ....

For most Americans, closing their laptop or clocking out at the end of an eight-hour shift at a restaurant or construction site is the norm, give or take a half-hour or so for lunch. And as tiring as a day of work can be, it’s easy to forget that over a century ago, people died to afford us the right to an eight-hour workday.

Much of this country’s radical labor tradition has been erased by our political leaders’ allegiance to big business and a reverence for markets and capitalism. But the modicum of rights still afforded to workers in 2021 stem from the 19th century unionists, anarchists, and socialists who first defied the capitalists who created the abhorrent working conditions of the Industrial Revolution. ....
