Free backpacks available for SWAG residents

The start of the school year is edging closer and the Southwest Advocacy Group (SWAG) is having its annual backpack giveaway for residents in those neighborhoods.
We just think this is one of the nicest things we can do for kids and get them excited about returning to school, said Dorothy Benson, chairwoman of SWAG.
The Backpack Giveaway is a collaboration between the nonprofit and the Partnership for Strong Families.
SWAG will give backpacks to families with K-12 students who live in the neighborhoods of Majestic Oaks, Holly Heights, Harbor Cove, Pine Meadows, Hidden Oaks Mobile Home Park, Gordon Manor, Tower Oaks and Linton Oaks. ....

The handful of people attending the Re-Entry Conference workshop last Wednesday received tons of important information on such things as navigating the gig economy and starting a small business.
If you have background issues that keep you from finding employment, don’t worry because at the Re-Entry Community Job and Resource Fair there will be employers willing to hire eligible applicants with background issues and other barriers to employment.
The fair will be held from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Monday at GNV Commons, formerly known as Lot 10 at 100 SW First Ave. in downtown Gainesville at the corner of Southwest First Avenue and Second Street. ....

Child Abuse Prevention Month Follows ‘Increase In Child Abuse Cases’ In Alachua County

This April’s Child Abuse Prevention Month has perhaps never been more needed. According to a Gainesville advocacy center, the pandemic caused an increase in child abuse while limiting the ability for it to be recognized and reported.
At the Child Advocacy Center in Gainesville, professionals work together to coordinate investigations and interventions for child abuse cases. Their goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for neglected and abused children.
According to the center’s website, in 2020 they helped 3,235 people affected by child abuse, including 1,895 child victims. Of this group of children, 55 were victims of human trafficking and 15 were victims of child pornography. ....

You may be pleasantly surprised to hear that Gainesville has opted into a nationally recognized program to be designated age-friendly by both the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and the World Health Organization’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.
As a requirement to join the Age-Friendly Community Network, Alachua County had to apply for admission into an elite group of only 384 cities nationally and only 33 communities in Florida. The organization leading this process is Elder Options, the state-designated area agency on aging, under the umbrella of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. They administer ....
