NSW has first Covid-related death in 10 months
In Australia, New South Wales has reported its first Covid-related death of the current outbreak.
The authorities said a woman, in her 90s, died in Sydney. She had contracted the virus in a family setting.
The state reported 77 new cases on Sunday. There are now 52 people in hospital, with 15 in intensive care.
Sydney is currently in lockdown, as Australia s largest city fights to contain the highly transmissible Delta strain of the virus.
The reported death is the state s 57th and the first in 10 months.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned that the number of new daily infections would rise further on Monday. ....

Shared parental leave (SPL) is a “deeply flawed and chronically failing policy” that should be scrapped and replaced with a “use it or lose it” period of paid leave for mothers and fathers, according to campaigners, trade unions and economists.
Six years after the coalition government introduced shared parental leave as a flagship policy to transform gender equality and make life easier for families, take-up remains low.
“We need to urgently overhaul the parental leave system, not just tinker around the edges. Both parents should have time to care and bond with their baby, without having to transfer leave between them,” said the Trades Union Congress (TUC) secretary general, Frances O’Grady, adding that the UK had some of the worst-paid maternity and paternity leave. ....
