Honeybees and their hives inhabit some of Newton’s open spaces, including Kennard Park, Norumbega Conservation Area, and Nahanton Park. The hives, which are licensed by the city, produce honey and some beekeepers use them to support education.
“Our mission is to get as many observation hives into classroom as possible,” said Mark Lewis, a licensed beekeeper who has six hives at the old Deer Park in the Hammond Woods.
Lewis works with Classroom Hives, an organization that places honeybee hives in classrooms, mostly in Boston Public Schools. Students observe the hive through glass windows while bees continue to forage outside via an external entrance.
