From slavery to BLM: the ups and downs of 200 years of Guardian race reporting

Last modified on Thu 6 May 2021 03.37 EDT
Fifty years ago, as the Guardian marked its 150th birthday, the then editor, Alastair Hetherington, reflected on the changes he had seen since he joined the paper 21 years earlier. Intriguingly, he singled out social forces striving to upset “racial harmony”, and promised resistance.
But in the same 1971 edition, a gallery of images of the senior staff showed how far the paper had to go. All men. All white. In its first 150 years, the number of journalists of colour employed by the paper could be counted on the fingers of one hand.
Unsurprisingly for a 200-year-old institution, the Guardian has not always got it right in terms of race coverage. An early article from 1823 regretted the “cruelty and injustice of negro slavery”, but also noted that “amongst all the obvious disadvantages of slave labour, there is none more striking than its tendency to deteriorate the soil”. That set the tone for decades of coverage that often failed to empathise: during the US civil war, the Manchester Guardian was so concerned about the cotton trade that underpinned it that it sided with the slave-owning south.

Sausages sizzling at Ballimore BBQ

Sausages sizzling at Ballimore BBQ
The residents of Ballimore now have a central place to throw some ‘snags on the barbie’, following the successful funding application submitted by the Ballimore Progress Association. The enthusiastic group have been working with Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) staff after receiving $11,500 across two rounds of the Financial Assistance Program, to install a community BBQ at Thelma Pelosi Park.
Acting Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Councillor Stephen Lawrence said this is what the Financial Assistance Program is all about. “What a great result for the village of Ballimore. This group has been extremely active in advocating for their community and it’s extremely rewarding to see them enjoying a sausage or two, cooked on their very own accessible, electric BBQ,” said Councillor Lawrence.

What counts as a hate crime in the UK?

Card image cap

Sarah Phillimore, barrister and co-founder of campaign group Fair Cop, told The Telegraph she hopes the review “marks the beginning of the end for the well-intentioned but deeply flawed hate crimes guidance”.
However, the College of Policing’s Iain Raphael has warned that, without recording the incidents, officers risk “having a blind spot in their local understanding, hampering their ability to protect members of vulnerable and marginalised groups”. Raphael cited the Stephen Lawrence inquiry report as showing the need for officers to understand “how hate can escalate”.
How is a ‘hate crime’ different to a ‘non-crime hate incident’?
A hate crime is defined by the Crown Prosecution Service as an incident where the offending party is “motivated by hostility or demonstrates hostility” towards a person’s race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity. In order to prosecute an alleged hate crime “it is necessary to demonstrate hostility” through evidence, the College of Policing explains.

Met spied on Blair Peach partner for more than two decades, inquiry hears

Scotland Yard spied for more than two decades on the partner of an anti-racist protester who police accept was almost certainly killed by one of their officers at a demonstration, a public inquiry has been told.
Celia Stubbs campaigned for years to uncover the truth of how her boyfriend, Blair Peach, died at the demonstration. It was one of the most controversial cover-ups in modern policing history.
Documents disclosed by the public inquiry revealed how undercover officers working for a secret Metropolitan police unit monitored the progress of the campaign that she and other activists ran.

Australia's first alcohol-free cocktail bar opens in Brunswick East

Attached to the front of the distillery of the same name in Brunswick East, Brunswick Aces is Australia's first permanent non-alcoholic bar. But rather than merely act as a cellar door for Brunswick Aces' own non-acoholic gin alternative its aim, according to co-founder and CEO Stephen Lawrence is to demonstrate "how wonderful non-alcoholic products can be".
Lawrence firmly believes that the trend of Australians drinking less is "here to stay," and says "we want to promote it and prove to the world that a non-alcoholic bar is a viable option."
To this end, the menu includes over 100 alcohol-free options, from cocktails made using alcohol-free spirit brands like Ovant and Gnista as well as Brunswick Aces' signature Sapiir, to zero-percent wines and beers from producers like McGuigan, Edenvale, NON, Heaps Normal and Nort. In a nod to standard bar menus, which list one or two non-alcoholic options, there's one alcoholic option – a gin and tonic.

The Derrick Bird shootings are to appear in a new true-crime series presented by Dermot Murnaghan. Dermot Murnaghan remembers the morning of June 2, 2010, when the news broke of a gunman on the loose in West Cumbria, indiscriminately killing 12 people and injuring 11 more. Along with former Met...

THE chilling case of a pharmacist who murdered his wife in cold blood as he planned to start a new life in Australia with his gay lover is set to feature in a week long documentary series.
Mitesh Patel strangled his wife Jessica in their home before casually heading to his favourite pizza shop to create an alibi for his callous murder by pretending it was a burglary gone wrong.
He stood to gain from a £2m insurance policy which he planned to use to fulfil his fantasy of emigrating to Sydney to be with his “soulmate” Dr Amit Patel.

Line of duty: What does Cressida Dick really want?
The first female and first openly gay Met Police commissioner is known to be cool-headed. But with challenges coming from all political sides, will that last?
May 2, 2021
In April 2018, Tanesha Melbourne-Blake was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Tottenham. She was just 17 years old, and an hour before her death had been happily posting on Snapchat like any carefree teenager. Amid rising street violence in the capital, her murder was a traumatic moment for the community. David Lammy, the local Labour MP, invited Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, and Sadiq Khan, the London mayor, to meet her family and friends. Lammy recalls it being a “very tough” meeting. “The feelings were really raw, the young people were very angry, they didn’t feel safe.”

Line of Duty review – an audacious, deranged, reverse-ferreting finale

Like Jed Mercurio’s previous hit, Bodyguard, the latest series of his police procedural Line of Duty has caught fire. The public has crushed to its bosom the latest tale of anti-corruption unit AC-12, led with crusading zeal by the dauntless trio Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) in the fight against individual and institutionalised rottenness in the police force. Even before last night’s finale it had already become the highest rated British TV drama in 13 years (beating Bodyguard’s 10.4m overnight viewers by another half million). At the risk of sounding like a mere embittered fan shouting at Johnny-come-latelies, however …

Between the Lines: a hard-nosed 90s police drama

Between the Lines has been screening on BBC iPlayer (some episodes still available)
You may have been aware of a kerfuffle in the press and on social media a few weeks ago about an interview the television scriptwriter Jed Mercurio gave to GQ magazine in the run-up to the broadcast on BBC1 of the sixth series of his police corruption drama Line of Duty (2012-). Mercurio used language you wouldn’t want your mother to hear you using to describe a (young, female) journalist who had had the nerve to express disappointment in the programme’s fifth series.
His crossness might better have been directed at many of his dedicated fans: what I’ve noticed in reactions to recent series is the rise of an ironic, meta tone, treating the series as an endlessly comic, teasing challenge to viewers’ credulity – the oohs and aaahs at the latest scarcely plausible revelation mingling with oohs and aahs at the stodgy sexiness of Adrian Dunbar’s Superintendent Ted Hastings, with his hushed catchphrase “Mother of God!”

Peter Hain and others invaded sports pitches in non-violent protests against apartheid
A former Labour cabinet minister who was monitored by Scotland Yard for 25 years has accused undercover police of being on the "wrong side of history".
Lord Peter Hain became a leader of the anti-apartheid movement in the 1970s.
He told an inquiry officers should have apprehended South African agents rather than track liberals, vicars and anti-racists in causes he was involved with.
Lord Hain is the most senior politician to appear at the inquiry into historical undercover policing abuses.
