Stem cell study illuminates the cause of a devastating inherited heart disorder

PHILADELPHIA Scientists in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have uncovered the molecular causes of a congenital form of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), an often-fatal heart disorder.
This inherited form of DCM which affects at least several thousand people in the United States at any one time and often causes sudden death or progressive heart failure is one of multiple congenital disorders known to be caused by inherited mutations in a gene called
LMNA. The
LMNA gene is active in most cell types, and researchers have not understood why
LMNA mutations affect particular organs such as the heart while sparing most other organs and tissues. ....

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/ Penn Dental Medicine was among the 23 state-wide awardees from the administration of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolff to advance coronavirus research. The award to Dr. Henry Daniell, W.D. Miller Professor, Department of Basic & Translational Sciences, is part of $10 million in funding through the state s COVID-19 Vaccines, Treatments and Therapies (CV-VTT) program to support the rapid advancement of vaccines, treatments, and therapies.
Dr. Daniell was awarded just over $823,000 to accelerate the progress of two novel strategies for combating COVID-19, both of which leverage decades of experience with the successful development of plant-based protein therapies to develop targeted oral therapeutics and vaccination strategies. ....
