(AP) On a Central Kentucky hillside, over a thousand American white oak stand in neat rows, just barely towering over nearby blades of grass. These trees, currently just seedlings, have sat in this field on the Maker’s Mark Starhill Farm for less than a month. But years from now, researchers hope they can provide answers on how to protect a species endemic to many American forests and necessary for the creation of the amber liquid that has become one of the state’s most famous exports. ....

(March 16, 2021) Having a working distillery on campus at the University of Kentucky will help train the next generation of distillers and spirits’ industry professionals. Vendome Copper and Brass Works recently pledged its support to UK’s James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits to be part of that mission with the Vendome Copper and Brass Works Distillery Support Fund. “We are very excited and appreciative to have the opportunity to be a part of UK’s James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits. The distilling industry is very dear to our hearts,” said Barbara Sherman, vice president for Vendome Copper and Brass Works. “Vendome was founded in 1903 serving this industry, and today we still provide equipment to distilleries throughout Kentucky, the United States and worldwide.” ....

(March 12, 2021) As chairwoman of the board for the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, Jessica Pendergrass said 2020 was a year that required action and change, not just words, when it came to diversity, equity and inclusion. She is only the third woman chair of the board in its 140 years. Pendergrass will co-chair a panel discussion March 12 during the James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits virtual Bourbon Industry Conference. Panelists will discuss their experiences in their own career paths and field questions from conference attendees. “Women in leadership are often questioned and held to a different standard than men. Our skillset is analyzed, our intentions are questioned, our communication style is scrutinized, and we are asked to seek a second opinion from men when advising on a topic,” said Pendergrass, general counsel and chief ....
