University of Kentucky to host irrigation workshop

University of Kentucky to host irrigation workshop
The University of Kentucky will host an irrigation workshop at 9 a.m. CST Feb. 18 on the videoconferencing platform Zoom. The workshop is sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau.
During the workshop, UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment specialists will provide an update on their irrigation research projects. Matt Dixon, meteorologist with the UK Ag Weather Center will discuss instances when irrigation is needed in Kentucky, based on historical weather events.
Only a small percentage of Kentucky grain producers regularly irrigate their crops, but many producers are interested in irrigation due to its potential benefits. Irrigation can keep crops from becoming stressed during dry periods, and it can help producers use the correct amount of inputs and may help those inputs remain in the field. ....

Farmer, Researcher Partnerships Are Backbone of Agricultural Advances

of
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 11, 2021)
Agriculture is advancing in fields across Kentucky thanks to farmers willing to take the time and share their land for research.
Scientists in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment engage with an extensive network of producers in all disciplines. The partnerships do not form overnight but over the course of numerous meetings, developing personal relationships and building mutual trust and respect.
“I am so proud of our researchers, who make the time and effort to go and listen to producers and see firsthand what their problems and questions are,” said Robert Houtz, associate dean for research and director of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station. “Then together, they execute the experimentation and analyses that lead to useful and valuable solutions that increase the competitiveness of our state agricultural industry and demonstrate our commitment to the land-grant mission. ....

Corn Connection: Green River Distilling's bourbon relying on regional farmers

When it comes to bourbon production, corn must be its key ingredient.
And there’s not a day that goes by that corn isn’t being unloaded at Green River Distilling Co. in Owensboro.
On Dec. 14, Isaac Brown of Brown Farms in Beaver Dam, was there unloading a semitrailer of corn.
Brown said most of his corn is sold to Perdue Farms as chicken feed, but that he does appreciate that a portion of his grain is being used in bourbon production.
“It’s cool coming here and knowing that a product you’re growing is going into their product they’re making and it’s distributed all around the world,” Brown said. ....

Try the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum and the Green River Distilling Co.
Their gift shops are seeing good business this holiday season, spokeswomen say.

Ebelhar said, “Speaking of bourbon, the newly released Yellow Banks Bourbon has been a top seller as well. This Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey was developed in collaboration with the Kentucky Corn Growers Association with a portion of the profits going to corn research.” ....
