Mareeba hobby trainer Alex Malliff is a big fan of highly rated rival Tennessee Boy but is confident his promising sprinter Cleaver Greene can win another round at Cairns on Tuesday.
Malliff works as a plumber for the Mackay Shire Council and is looking forward to Cleaver Greene clashing with the Roy Chillemi-trained Tennessee Boy in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap over 950 metres.
Malliff has only a small team of eight horses in work and rates Cleaver Greene as one of the best horses he’s ever trained. ....

New Delhi, March 9 : Chess player Koneru Humpy won the BBC India Sportswoman of the Year award for 2020. The award was based on a public vote in which Humpy beat sprinter Dutee Chand, shooter Manu Bhaker, wrestler Vinesh Phogat and hockey captain Rani Rampal.
Being an indoor game, chess doesn t get as much attention as sports like cricket gets in India. But with this award, I hope the game will draw people s attention, she said after winning the honour on Monday. ....

BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year winner Koneru Humpy gives advice to young athletes
Chess player Koneru Humpy has won the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award for 2020, following a public vote.
The 33-year-old beat sprinter Dutee Chand, airgun shooter Manu Bhaker, wrestler Vinesh Phogat and India hockey captain Rani Rampal to the award.
Humpy is the World Rapid Chess champion having won the title in December 2019 after a two-year maternity break. In 2020, she won the Cairns Cup, an elite-level tournament for the top female players. ....

33 dead in 48 days: Police "disturbed" by horror road toll


 
Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder described Queensland s rising road toll as disturbing and has called on all road users to step up their game and simply do the right thing .
A total of 33 people have been killed as a result of traffic crashes across the state this year - 15 more than the same time last year.
 
 
I find that quite disturbing, Acting Chief Superintendent Rohweder said.
We really need to get the message through to all those drivers out there using the road network that they need to obey the road rules.
It is the driving public who decide how they conduct themselves on the road. ....
