Since the days of the Antonio Villaraigosa administration, Los Angeles City Hall has been one of our letter writers favorite punching bags. Conservative readers lambast the mayor and City Council for what they feel are onerous regulations on businesses and for taking progressive stances on issues like immigration, and readers on the left decry the apparent dissonance between those stances and actual actions on traffic, housing, homelessness and policing. Where there is cross-ideological agreement among readers, it isn t in the city s favor: No one likes the airport or the roads, and everyone agrees the rent is too damn high. ....

Webinar focuses on how young women can turn science into a career


On Feb. 11, the world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Started in 2015 as a United Nations resolution, the day celebrates equal access for females in science and covers the issues many girls face, including gender stereotypes and education. 
The worldwide population splits in half between men and women, but according to the United Nations, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women and only 30% of female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. 
On Guam, two speakers will host a webinar discussion, in tandem with the global celebrations working to address women in science.
Free and open to the public, the event sponsored by Guam Women s Chamber of Commerce and Bureau of Women s Affairs eventcovers ways to apply science to real-life situations at school and how girls can turn science into a career. Students and teachers can register for the event.  ....
