But curiously, it wasn’t until 1940 that Kewanee High School fielded a team. Why did it take so long for the National Pastime to reach the high school? It’s possible that, because other youth baseball leagues were typically starting in the spring, it was hard to field a team – American Legion ball was hugely popular. Or perhaps because it was a spring sport which required fair weather, and the school didn’t think it was practical. ....

Kewanee Park board narrows field in director search Susan DeVilder Star Courier KEWANEE The field of candidates in the search for the next park director was narrowed Wednesday when the Kewanee Park Board met for a special meeting. Out of 11 applicants, the board chose four candidates to interview, said Brian Johnson, director of parks and recreation. Since much of the board meeting was conducted during a closed session, Johnson wasn’t at liberty to share any details. Thursday morning, Johnson said he was in the process of contacting the applicants to set up interviews, which the board is hoping to conduct at another special board meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 5:30 p.m. The interviews will also be conducted during a closed session. ....
