Engineering and Environmental Analysis Researchers Develop Technology to Invest in Local Communities

Prof. Cindy Kao, design and environmental analysis, is extending her lab’s research on technology and design to uplift young Ithaca girls, and Prof. K. Max Zhang, mechanical and aerospace engineering, is redefining the limits of technology and energy. Across STEM fields, both researchers are breaking down barriers and engage local communities.
Kao directs the Hybrid Body Lab, which develops on-skin interfaces delicate and thin wearable computers that the lab calls “smart tattoos.
Kao recently earned the early career National Science Foundation grant of nearly $500,000 to be issued over the next five years, dedicated to the development of toolkits to engage young girls and rural youth in interdisciplinary learning through on-skin interface workshops, according to the NSF. The workshops will occur in collaboration with the Ithaca Science Center and the New York State 4-H Youth Development organization. ....

New Faculty Directors to Support Research and Training at Cornell Atkinson

The Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability welcomes Professors Christine Goodale, the Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Environmental Science in the College of Arts and Sciences and K. Max Zhang, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering, as faculty directors. Beginning July 1, they will begin three-year terms to advance research efforts, strengthen cross-college collaborations, and guide the development of new programs.
“The faculty directors are critical to our distinct model of interdisciplinary research and training programs. Christy and Max have a long history of innovative approaches and engagement with the center, says David Lodge, the Francis J. DiSalvo Director of Cornell Atkinson. He added, “Their leadership in their fields and enthusiasm to drive university-wide efforts will fulfill key aspects of our knowledge-to-impact mission.” ....

Six grants support joint research in China through pandemic

The Cornell China Center (CCC) has announced six new grant awards, totaling $140,000, to support research by Cornell faculty teams partnering with researchers in China.
Focused on building solutions to meet the United Nations’ sustainable development goals for China and the world, the 2021 awards include four joint seed fund grants to expand collaborations between Cornell researchers and counterparts at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou and two China Innovation Grants.
CCC-funded research thrived in the past year, despite the COVID-19 crisis and logistical challenges the far-flung teams faced – from international travel bans to the 12-hour time difference. The center made 13 awards in 2020, including joint seed funding to five Cornell teams partnering with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. ....

Record-breaking wildfires made North American air worse in 2020

The devastating wildfires that torched a record 4.3 million acres in the U.S. in 2020 made North America the only region in the world where air quality was worse than during the previous year.
Most of the world’s major cities had better air last year than in 2019, mainly thanks to coronavirus lockdowns that cleared skies for weeks or months, according to the annual report by air quality platform IQAir. Though India’s New Delhi was the most-polluted capital city, its pollution levels nevertheless fell 16% from the previous year.
Los Angeles, Melbourne and Sao Paulo, all of which were close to major wildfires in 2020, were among the few where pollution was worse than in 2019. ....
