Alabama is a ruby red state in the Bible Belt with a reputation for temperance, dry counties and religious leaders worried over the effects of drunkenness.
But with little controversy, several bills loosening past restrictions on alcohol delivery advanced through the Alabama Legislature this spring.

“I think it’s the culture,” said state Rep. Terri Collins, R-Decatur, who sponsored a wine delivery bill that passed the Alabama House on Thursday. “I don’t think there is much of a fear in (direct shipments of alcohol).” ....

Tennessee Faces Economic Backlash Over Discriminatory Legislation

Since Tennessee Republicans passed a bill prohibiting transgender student athletes from competing on teams that affirm their gender identity, at least three conferences have backed out of coming to the state. Oracle, the tech giant expected to bring thousands of new jobs to Nashville, joined 86 other businesses in signing an open letter against the legislation.

While it s doubtful Oracle will back out of the relocation deal, canceled conferences alone could cost the state millions in visitor spending, hotel room purchases and more, says Joe Woolley, CEO of the Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce.
Woolley says three conferences have contacted him about pulling out of the state since SB228/HB3 passed in March, which will cause millions in lost revenue for the city of Nashville. Woolley says he can t make the specific conferences names public yet as each needs time to plan where they ll take their attendees, but that a similar event happened ....

Arkansas legislature targets trans students' names

The Arkansas state House has passed a measure that would allow teachers to ignore a transgender student’s preferred name or gender pronouns, the latest in a series of bills targeting the rights of trans children.
The measure, House Bill 1749, would bar public schools from requiring teachers or staff to address a student by their preferred pronouns or even a preferred name that does not conform to the student’s biological gender.
School employees who are required to use a pronoun, title or word to address a student would be protected under the state’s Civil Rights Act under the bill. ....
