Five SF Novels That Take the Long View of History

There are a fair number of SF novels that focus not on individual characters but on the society of which they are a part. Often the novels do so by focusing on the development of those cultures over time. Societies evolve; individuals come and go like mayflies. There’s a narrative, but not the sort of narrative we usually expect to enjoy.
You might think that it would be hard to make such books interesting. (I don’t think that anyone has ever described
The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire as a cracking thrill ride: “Could not put it down!”) The following five novels show that it is possible to write interesting works that take the long view. ....

This is an update to 50 authors, 50 science fiction stories shorter than novels. It s mostly an addition of 30 more authors (many from outside the big SF names ) but I also made some other tweaks.
I ve been playing around with re-reading favorite science fiction short stories while also seeing if there s anything that has managed to elude me over the years. I ve also tried to catch up with more recent authors given that I don t read as many books as I used to. (The market for science fiction short stories, in general, is in something of a decline but there are still some fabulous recent stories out there.) ....

Baxter County Library readers kept the pages turning in 2020

In spite of, or perhaps, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Baxter County Library patrons have been very busy reading in 2020. Initially, when the pandemic hit, eBook circulation shot up, peaking in May 2020, up 23% from May 2019. But, it is clear the community prefers books in print. Once the library reopened its doors in June and started offering holds pick-up service, the number of eBook check-outs started decreasing. From May to June of 2020, eBook check outs dropped down slightly by 6%, and print book circulation picked back up.If you’re curious to know the most popular titles in our community, check out the list below. ....
