BUSINESS PROFILE: Restaurateur Weir looking forward to normalcy


Owning and operating a restaurant is not the easiest of endeavors.
Carlos Weir and his wife, Erika, have accepted the challenge of running not one but two local restaurants. The first, Las Chabelas, opened in Brawley on Main Street in 2003 with only four tables, two booths and three employees. The second restaurant is The Courtroom Bourbons and Grill in El Centro, which opened in 2014.
Carlos Weir is native Californian who grew up in the greater Los Angeles area and moved to Imperial Valley more than 30 years ago. Erika Weir is a native of Imperial Valley.
When the couple decided to operate a restaurant, they knew the risk. Although the closure rate for restaurants in the first year is reported as high as 90 percent, the real number over the past 20 years is closer to 17 percent. This is actually a lower failure rate than other service-providing businesses, where 19 percent fail in the first year. ....

CAPECO makes a new 'Promise' in Pendleton


PENDLETON — The soft opening for the motel formerly known as The Whiskey Inn began on a sidewalk on Southeast Second Street.
About a half-dozen of Pendleton’s unhoused residents gathered Thursday, April 1, across the street in front of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, where Paula Hall, the chief executive officer of the Community Action Program of East Central Oregon, explained why the new homeless shelter and transitional housing project had been renamed the Promise Inn.
“We are making a promise to the homeless population and a promise to the community that we are going to keep this as an asset,” she said. ....

Celebrate poetry month in Angola


ANGOLA — You can celebrate National Poetry month all April long with various events and activities scheduled to take place in and around Angola.
Now in its 25th year, National Poetry Month was introduced in 1996 by the American Academy of Poets to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry throughout the United States.
In years past, celebrations in Angola have included a daily poetry reading on the Public Square in front of the Brokaw Movie House with storyteller, Trine University professor and columnist for this newspaper Lou Ann Homan.
This year, however, Homan said she’s approaching poetry month another way.
“I am doing poetry month a little differently, but fun,” she said. ....
