General Assembly names new WCU trustees

A former state representative from Matthews and a retired charitable trust director from Winston-Salem will replace former Principal Chief Joyce Dugan and Highlands construction company owner John Lupoli on the Western Carolina University Board of Trustees.
The appointments come from the N.C. General Assembly, which recently named Joseph Crocker and William Brawley to the seats. Their terms will run from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2025.
Crocker retired in December 2019, having previously worked as the director of Local Impact in Forsyth County at the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. He is well known for his extensive civic career across the Carolinas. During his tenure with the Trust, Crocker implemented programs that improved the lives of Forsyth County’s financially disadvantaged residents. ....

Wells Fargo, NextEra Energy Resources, and Duke Energy today announced a 20-year renewable energy purchase agreement, under which Wells Fargo will consume 100% of solar energy produced by the Blackburn Solar Project, a 58-megawatt 600-acre solar farm planned for Catawba County, North Carolina, under Duke Energy’s Green Source Advantage (GSA) program. The transaction announced today is Wells Fargo’s single largest to date and will supply approximately 8% of the company’s annual global electricity.

1,744-home development approved in Sherrills Ford over objections

Rezoning for a development in Sherrills Ford was approved by the Catawba County Board of Commissioners over the objections of several local residents and against the advice of the planning board.
The proposal approved by the board of commissioners will allow for a 1,744-home development by Prestige Corporate Development to be built on 872 acres between Mollys Backbone Road and Hopewell Church Road. The proposal to rezone the properties from lower-density zoning to a Planned Development Conditional District to allow for more homes to be built was rejected by the Catawba County Planning Board in early December after 12 people spoke against the project. The planning board only advises the county commissioners; the commissioners have final say. ....
