As an undergraduate student, Kelly Nguyen ’12 was an active member of the Stanford community, participating in research and Asian-American activism on campus. Two years after graduating with degrees in archaeology and classics, Nguyen began her doctoral studies at Brown University, where she is set to become the school’s first woman to receive a Ph.D. in ancient history. This fall, Nguyen will return to her alma mater but this time, not as a student.
Nguyen, along with Catherine Duarte, Jordan Starck, Eujin Park and Michaela Simmons, was selected last month to be part of the University’s first cohort of IDEAL Provostial Fellows, one of several initiatives introduced by President Marc Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Persis Drell in June to combat anti-Black racism.  ....

Stanford announces IDEAL Provostial Fellows appointments

Apr 14, 2021
As part of their IDEAL fellowships, the scholars will be assigned to the schools and departments corresponding to the fields of their doctorate, and they will teach one course per year while they expand on their research. Each fellow will be given a faculty mentor selected from among Stanford’s Academic Council faculty. The IDEAL fellows also will be involved in organizing a major Stanford conference that will bring together scholars who are at the forefront of the study of race and ethnicity.
“I am delighted to welcome our first IDEAL Provostial fellows to Stanford,” Drell said. “They are some of this country’s most promising young scholars conducting research on race and ethnicity. Their presence on campus represents a wonderful opportunity for students and faculty to interact with them and learn more about their research. Their work holds exceptional promise, and we are excited to support them at this early stage in their careers.” ....

Fatal police violence nearby increases risk of preterm birth

 E-Mail
Black women have 80% higher risk of preterm birth between 32 and 33 weeks of pregnancy if a Black person who lives in their neighborhood is killed by police during the pregnancy, according to a study by researchers at UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley.
The study by scientists at the UCSF California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBI-CA) and UC Berkeley School of Public Health, studied the records of 3.8 million pregnant women to assess whether fatal police violence occurring in their neighborhood during pregnancy was associated with extremely early, early, moderate or late preterm delivery.
Our findings suggest that deaths due to police violence, which already differentially affect Black and Brown communities, adversely affect the health of mothers and babies during pregnancy, said first author Dana Goin, PhD, post-doctoral scholar in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. In addition, we observed the strongest associations wi ....
