'We need you,' judge tells West Michigan police at annual memorial service

‘We need you,’ judge tells West Michigan police at annual memorial service
Updated May 13, 2021;
While the service is annual, there was no gathering in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of the memorial, one red rose is solemnly placed on a table to represent each officer who died. Individual West Michigan officers carry the roses to the table, accompanied by family of the fallen officer if in attendance.
Grand Rapids District Court Judge Jennifer Faber addressed a sizeable crowd of officers and families Thursday, May 13 at the American Legion Boat & Canoe Club at Monroe Avenue and Park Street.
She described police as an integral component to society, even as police have come under increased scrutiny in recent years.

Puna Strong Grants Program Awards $380,000 to Nonprofit Organizations

May 4, 2021 at 5:15 am
The County of Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Community Foundation (HCF) announce the award of $380,000 to 26 organizations through the Puna Strong grants program.
Puna Strong takes a community-based disaster management approach that values the knowledge and capacities of residents and builds on local resources. In addition to providing grants, the County and HCF will work with intermediaries in the community to assist with technical support, peer learning and network building among recipients.
The County and HCF launched Puna Strong in January 2021 to assist with disaster readiness and community resilience, both strategies identified in the Kīlauea Recovery and Resilience Plan, following the 2018 Kīlauea eruption. It is supported by $250,000 from the County’s recovery funds and $130,000 from HCF’s Hawai‘i Island Volcano Recovery Fund, Hawai‘i Island Strong Fund and Anderson-Beck Fund.

'Chainsaw massacre': Surrey police hunt for phantom lumberjack | UK news

Last modified on Thu 8 Apr 2021 17.16 EDT
Police are hunting a mystery tree feller who has cut down dozens of trees along a particularly picturesque stretch of the River Thames in Surrey, to the consternation of local residents.
In what has been called the “chainsaw massacre”, the culprit has struck up to 30 times over 10 days and is believed to be operating under cover of darkness.
The trees, all healthy, have been felled along a two-mile route between upmarket Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge. The motive, though, remains a mystery.
Extra police patrols have now been set up to try to catch the perpetrator or perpetrators, whom officers believe may be travelling in a small red car.
