Glider tow pilot died doing what he loved, coroner's inquest told

On Monday a friend supporting Lowen’s wife, Elisabeth, in court described how the family remembered the man “with a big appetite for the things he loved”.
He described Lowen as a “doer” with a mathematical brain, someone who was humble and owned up to his mistakes.
“Martin died doing something he loved and that provides a small comfort to his family who miss him terribly even after all these years.”
The crash that claimed Lowen’s life was investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which released its findings in 2015.

An inquest into the death of a pilot towing a glider is being heard in Christchurch

Martin Lowen, died in his fixed-wing airplane 2014, after taking off from the Canterbury Gliding Club in Springfield.
The crash was witnessed by glider pilot John McCaw, uncle of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw.
A coronial inquest into the death of the 55-year-old was delayed during official crash investigations.
There were also Covid-19 delays and other adjournments. ....

'All kinds of shock and horror' as eyewitnesses watched plane crash

Walker said he watched as Lowen took off with the glider towing behind and everything “looked normal” to him. At the end of the takeoff he thought the plane was flying a bit lower than normal.
When the tow plane turned right, the glider did not immediately mimic the movement of the plane as it was supposed to.
When he saw the plane crash behind some trees “all kinds of shock and horror” went through his mind. His first thought was to rush over to help Lowen.
On Monday a friend supporting Lowen’s wife, Elisabeth, in court told the inquest Lowen could be described in one word: “Big”. He was a big man physically, he was loud, and he was fun to have around. ....
