Uncovering first act in the life of an extraordinary theatre critic

Michael Church recalls his friend, the esteemed John Peter
John Peter defected to the West, aged 18, in 1956, later becoming chief theatre critic of The Sunday Times
AS a student I sometimes used to mug up for my weekly essay in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. And every time I went, I noticed another student always there. He would be sitting as still as a statue, gaze fixed firmly on his book; nothing ever disturbed his concentration, which he kept up hour after hour, week after week.
Five years later I ran into him at a party in London: John Peter, a live-wire Hungarian who had defected to the West in 1956. I had become a vociferously radical schoolteacher, and he suggested that I might enjoy working at ....

The Prince of Wales has shown his support for Catholics and Christians around the world through his contribution to this year’s Easter Meditation at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire.
The Prince recites the poem God’s Grandeur, by the distinguished Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins, that speaks powerfully of a promise of renewal – for the physical world in which we live, but also for our spiritual lives.
This poem, written almost a hundred and fifty years ago, encourages people to see God in all things, offering a brighter future. The Easter Meditation is made up of three sections (nocturnes), with poetry and scripture, prayer, reflection and music. The film also includes precious artefacts housed in Stonyhurst’s museum that include The Holy Thorn (from the Crown of Thorns), which once belonged to Mary Queen of Scots, on loan from the Jesuit Province of Great Britain. ....

Honesty helps us face history

Georgetown is well known for the opportunities it has provided to African Americans, especially through the legacy of legendary basketball coach John Thompson. Yet the Jesuits who run the school once bought and sold human beings. In fact, in 1838, they sold 272 people to pay off the university’s debts.
When confronted with this kind of information, one has several choices. For far too long we have minimized, ignored or revised history to avoid uncomfortable facts. We can choose to speak the truth, however.
In 2015, the current president of Georgetown, John DeGioia, created a group to study the university’s history with slavery. No stone was left unturned and almost 8,000 descendants of these 272 people were found. In consultation with members of this group, the Jesuits have pledged $100 million through the Descendants Truth and Reconciliation Foundation. Their hope is “to advance the transformative power of truth and reconciliation in America.” ....

Charles Dominic Plater, SJ (1875-1921): on the centenary of his death

Born in Mortlake, England, on September 2, 1875, Charles Dominic Plater was educated at the Jesuits’ Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, where he was remarkably popular with masters and fellow students alike for his personal magnetism and his regular success in winning school prizes.
He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Roehampton, southwest London, on September 7, 1894. In 1900 he interrupted his philosophy course at the end of its second year to proceed to the Jesuit Hall (Campion Hall), Oxford, to read classics. Gaining a Second in Mods (exams taken in the first part of an Oxford degree) and then a First in Greats (a degree in Classics), Plater accompanied his early success and promise in classics with a lifelong interest in archaeology. ....
