As a youngster, I was the only one of my friends with any interest in politics. It must have been instilled in me at an early age, as I recall my father and my grandfather – his father – arguing politics in the run-up to various elections.
My father was a committed socialist, a Labour Party supporter. My grandfather, from Caithness, argued the Liberal corner.

It may be worth taking a step back from last week’s Scottish parliamentary election and considering what the SNP actually achieved.
Campbell Gunn
In 2011 the party won 69 seats, effectively breaking the D’Hondt voting system, which had been designed (by Labour) to give no party with less than 50% of the votes more than 50% of the seats – as happens at virtually every Westminster election. ....

Those of us who have been forced to sit through various committee sessions over the years have known for some time that this system is unfit for purpose. The problem was brought into sharp public focus this month with the high-profile appearance of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon before the Committee on the Scottish Government Handling of Harassment Complaints. Thanks to partisan, soft-ball questioning by th ....
