: The genomic surveillance and sequencing procedure has been singled out as Malaysia’s best weapon in the Covid-19 war.
Health experts said this strategy, coupled with strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOP), will be more helpful in addressing the pandemic than a total lockdown.
“Lockdowns have always had limited applications and yield unsustainable results,” said Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy chief executive officer Azrul Mohd Khalib.
He pointed out that in the United Kingdom, 7.5% of all confirmed cases are put through the genomic sequencing process.
“However, we do not do enough sampling for genomic sequencing so it is not enough to conclude that the sharp increase in the number of cases are caused by the Delta variant.” ....

PETALING JAYA: While the arrival of the Delta variant of the coronavirus to our shores was expected, there is no evidence to show that it is more dangerous than other strains, medical experts say.

PETALING JAYA: The public healthcare system in the Klang Valley is at breaking point and experts say the government should consider sending non-Covid patients to private hospitals so that the strain on public hospitals can be reduced.
Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy founder and chief executive officer Azrul Mohd Khalib said private hospitals can only act after being permitted to do so by the Health Ministry.
“The reality is that expertise for infectious diseases is concentrated in the public healthcare system, not the private sector.
“Doctors trained in public health and infectious diseases and who are now working in the private sector should be allowed to work in the public sector,” he said. ....

The Smart Local Malaysia on the new virus strain, Mr Azrul Mohd Khalib, the chief executive of the Galen Centre, warns that sooner or later, the Lambda variant that emerged in Latin America will spread to other countries including Malaysia.
“It is inevitable. The arrival of Delta was expected and we should expect the same for Lambda,” he said, adding that in order to better understand the diversity of the virus variants locally and make necessary preparations, the government needs to monitor the situation closely with increased testing and detection of the genetic sequences of COVID-19 cases here. ....
