(Chip Somodevilla/Pool via AP) Bethany College will return to in-person commencements in May, and the senior United States senator from West Virginia will be on hand to help celebrate. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., will deliver the commencement address at Bethany’s ceremony, at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at Bison Stadium. The graduation ceremony and the baccalaureate ceremony on Friday, May 7, will be open to the graduating classes of both 2020 and 2021. In-person ceremonies were canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Manchin BETHANY Bethany College has scheduled in-person baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies May 7-8 for the classes of 2021 and 2020 with COVID-19 health and safety precautions in place. Baccalaureate is scheduled for 5 p.m. May 7, and commencement for 10 a.m. May 8, in Bison Stadium. The college will also live-stream the ceremonies for those who are unable to be on campus. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., will deliver the commencement address. Manchin was sworn into the U.S. Senate in 2010, filling the vacancy created by the death of Sen. Robert C. Byrd. Manchin is the chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, perhaps the most important Democratic vote for the Biden administration, said Monday that he hopes Mr. Biden‘s nomination of his wife to a $160,000-a-year post “goes through well.” “That’s great,” Mr. Manchin told reporters upon learning that the president formally nominated Gayle Connelly Manchin to serve as federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission. “I hope to see she goes through well. Everybody seems to know her pretty well.” The president had announced his intention to nominate Mrs. Manchin last month. Mr. Manchin said his wife was recommended for the post by Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers.
