HOUGHTON Four recent alumni of Houghton-Portage Township Schools have launched an initiative to get the district to add more education on racial discrimination and social justice.
Three of the graduates Boris Busov, Adeline Grier-Welch and Cassandra Van Dam spoke to the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Houghton in a virtual forum Sunday.
The three 2012 graduates, along with 2016 graduate Finn Storer, began talking after the murder of George Floyd last year, Grier-Welch said. They wondered if their alma mater had done anything since they graduated to discuss racism.
The students sent an email to the superintendent and school board. Both were responsive, but said with the district dealing with the more immediate challenges of COVID, it hadn’t been looked at district-wide, Grier-Welch said. ....

HOUGHTON Dr. Caryn L. Heldt from MTU is the virtual guest at Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 10:30am. She will discuss the many different types of COVID vaccines in clinical trials and on the market, the difference and why the compressed timelines for clinical trials are not compromising safety. Finally, we will explore current and future vaccine manufacturing methodologies. The goal is to increase the number of doses available of new and current vaccines while keeping costs low.

The Sustainability Film Series and facilitated discussion will begin its 11th year with the showing of True Cost, a film about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world.
The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. This 2015 documentary film investigates who really pays the price for our clothing? The discussion facilitator will be Soonkwan Hong (CoB), associate professor of marketing.
