Treatment of mothers with postpartum depression using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) led to adaptive changes in the brains and the behavior of their infants.
The nervous and cardiovascular systems of the infants were observed to have healthy changes, and both mother and father reported that the infants were able to better regulate their emotions and behavior.

In fact, we found that after their moms were treated that their infant s brain activity normalized to the levels seen in our healthy infants. The new research published by Elsevier has shown that early life experiences can significantly affect brain development and neurobiological health that can affect the next generation. The study showed that the infants of mothers who suffered emotional neglect as a child displayed an altered brain circuitry that is responsible for fear response and anxiety.
Study lead author Cassandra Hendrix, Ph.D., of the Department of Psychology at Emory University in Atlanta, USA, said that these results show that our brain development is not only shaped by what happens in our own life but is also impacted by things that happened to our parents before we were even conceived. ....

Jonne Arnold wasn’t proud of her life five years ago.
She was a college dropout who struggled holding down a consistent job. At the same time, Arnold was in the middle of an unhealthy relationship with the father of her first child.
