Utica NY pilot program to respond to mental health calls launches

A pilot partnership between the Utica Police Department and the Neighborhood Center s Mobile Crisis Assessment Team to respond to mental health calls has officially launched.
Officials made the announcement Thursday morning at Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Park on South Street in Utica. Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri noted the park has been the site of several past mental health calls.
It s always been more reactive than proactive, he said of law enforcement s response to such calls.
The year-long pilot program, which officially began April 26, tasks a Utica police officer and an MCAT social worker with responding to mental health calls. ....

It s a Tuesday evening and Nicole Von Laven, a behavioral health specialist with Deschutes County s Mobile Crisis Assessment Team, answers a phone call from Bend Police Sgt. Elizabeth Lawrence that the veteran officer placed to the county s mental health crisis hotline.
Lawrence tells Von Laven she s at the home of a family whose adult son is experiencing a mental break that, as far as they know, is happening for the first time. Lawrence told Von Laven the subject is agitated, loudly arguing with himself and pacing around the backyard and sweating, although the temperature on this night is in the high 20s. UTICA, N.Y. – The Resource Center for Independent Living held a forum to discuss Utica’s police reform plan, which needs to be approved by the state by April 1.
The Utica Police Reform Committee developed the plan, which identifies ways to improve law enforcement policies and procedures.
The plan also details existing programs and initiatives that were created to help with emergency response, like working with the Mobile Crisis Assessment Team from The Neighborhood Center. The team responds to crises to provide mental health assessments and assist in de-escalating intense situations. ....

Utica police, Neighborhood Center to test pilot crisis intervention program

A combined effort between the Utica Police Department and the Neighborhood Center s Mobile Crisis Assessment Team to redirect mental health calls in the city is underway.
The Crisis Intervention Team, consisting of a police officer and a crisis counselor, will work out of police headquarters to respond to mental health calls and divert individuals from the criminal justice system to mental health resources in the area.
Last year, the Utica Police Department responded to around 800 calls related to mental health crises, according to Chief Mark Williams. He and MCAT Director Kristin Sauerbier both agree these are not necessarily calls police are equipped to respond to. ....
