Luzerne County bench poised to become evenly split following Tuesday's election


The race for Luzerne County judge has narrowed to three candidates — all of them women — for the November general election, and if two of them prevail the county bench will have an equal number of women and men in 2022 for the first time in history.
Former Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis won both a Republican and Democratic nomination in Tuesday’s primary election, unofficial results show.
While that would have been a bigger deal when straight-party voting still existed, Salavantis is still the clear front-runner going into the fall, said Ed Mitchell, a local veteran political consultant.
“She’s still at an advantage because she got such a good vote from both parties,” Mitchell said. “I’m not going to say she’s a sure thing because nobody knows what will happen in politics.” ....

A second forum was held on Tuesday night inviting members of the public to judge potential future Luzerne County judges ahead of next week’s primary election.
Held by the Wilkes-Barre NAACP, the virtual forum comes after last week’s, which was held by the League of Women Voters of Wilkes-Barre Area in conjunction with Misericordia University. The forum was moderated by David Yonki, vice president of the chapter, who allowed the five candidates 90 seconds each to answer a series of questions asked either by him or members of the virtual audience. ....
