Temporary closure of parking area set for Little Presque Isle in Marquette County

The Department of Natural Resources says the closure is to combine entrances and expand the parking area. Alternative parking to access the trail can be found at the Wetmore Pond parking lot, south of the closed parking area. The closure will affect bike, vehicle, and foot traffic.
Funding for the project comes from $300,000 provided under a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant.

MARQUETTE Three area projects will receive development grants after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday signed HB 4469, which appropriates $37.8 million in Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grants to support 76 recreation projects and land purchases throughout Michigan.
The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board recommended the grants in December.
“The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund supports quality outdoor recreation, giving Michiganders the ability to safely enjoy the outdoors and boosting local economies,” Whitmer said in a statement. “This funding is crucial to helping communities utilize their natural resources and make Michigan’s public spaces more accessible and attractive to residents and visitors. I am proud to sign this piece of bipartisan legislation into law and support Michigan’s recreational resources and economy.” ....

MARQUETTE Outside, passing motorists honked their support for about 75 protestors marching in front of the Department of Natural Resources office along U.S. 41 Wednesday. The protestors carried signs saying, “They’re paving paradise,” “Do Nothing Right,” and “We want a public hearing,” in their continued effort to prevent the DNR from developing Little Presque Isle, which is five miles north of Marquette off County Road 550. “The DNR keeps insisting we’re just small vocal minority,” said Don Snitgen, as he stood along the highway holding a large sign saying, “Honk to save Little Presque Isle.” The DNR wants to construct 27 campsites on the 2,810 acre recreation area. The DNR has no plans to hold a public hearing. A public hearing was held by Marquette Township in August, where few people voiced o ....
