Seattle City Councilmember Dan Strauss introduced legislation Monday to extend the city’s café streets pilot program for another year.
The program has allowed Seattle restaurants and other retail storefronts to use the streets in front of their businesses for outdoor dining and displays, which has helped many of them be able to continue operating safely during the COVID-19 pandemic and allow for social distancing.
Strauss is chair of the city’s Land Use and Neighborhoods Committee. He previously sponsored a bill to help make home businesses legal, including Yonder Bar in Greenwood, by changing a few land use codes for one year. ....

After the pandemic hit, Caitlin Braam’s long-time dream of opening a cider bar was dashed. Instead, she opened Yonder Cider out of her garage in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood, selling cans and growlers to go.
“We have our Liquor Control license, we also have a city business license,” Braam said. “So when we started looking into this, we did call the city to ask if this was possible because we knew we’re in a single family zoned area. They were like, ‘go ahead, the way something will happen is if a lot of people complain.’ Well, one person decided they didn’t like Yonder Bar and complained ....

Home-Based Businesses Could Save the Post-Pandemic Economy

Home-Based Businesses Could Save the Post-Pandemic Economy
Seattle s city council considers reducing arbitrary and exclusionary limits on home-based businesses.

Yet in some cities, outdated zoning codes prevent many businesses from being legally conducted in homes. In Seattle, zoning code excludes all sorts of uses throughout the 75% of the city that’s strictly zoned for single-family detached homes. The concept of home occupations, activists argue, is outdated and harmful to both small businesses and the vibrancy of neighborhoo ....
