Burnham woman named one of two Maine State Society scholars

Washington, D.C. The Maine State Society of Washington D.C. has announced its two 2021 scholars:  Micaela Simeone of Burnham, winner of the $1,500 Marjorie Pearson Scholarship, and Grace Lee of Falmouth, winner of the $1,500 Dirigo Scholarship. Both are juniors at Bowdoin College
Simeone has a 3.626 grade point average and is pursuing a double major in English and digital and computational studies. Her work experience includes advocacy and communications work at AARP, as well as food service industry experience at both the Bowdoin dining facility and in fine dining at an inn. She has strong volunteering experience and community involvement, including co-leading weekly student volunteer groups to a local retirement home before pivoting during pandemic restrictions to having phone calls with isolated seniors. ....

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, violence and blatant racism toward Asian people has skyrocketed. While people are becoming more aware of the issue, many are left wondering what can be done to support the Asian community.
The Chinese Association at Stony Brook is collaborating with other Asian student organizations like the Korean Student Association and Asian Students Alliance, among others, to raise money for the Hate is a Virus CommUNITY Fund.
While this collaboration has encouraged Asian students especially to support each other at a time where their community is hurting, members of other minority groups are left to determine how they will demonstrate their allyship. ....
