Telangana Corona News: Middle-class at risk during second wave, says official | Hyderabad News

Apart from upscaling testing and surveillance, the state health department has also increased vaccination centres and has ramped up vaccination in the recent days.
HYDERABAD: The middle and upper middle-class category of residents are more prone to contracting the virus during the ongoing second wave. Currently, around 5,000 patients are admitted at various private and corporate hospitals in the state, especially in and around the city, pushing bed availability to the brink.
“During the first wave, majority of the lower-class population already got affected. In the current wave, we are seeing more of middle-class and above getting affected. This is the reason we are seeing a large number of admissions in the private hospitals. Currently around 2,000 patients are admitted in government hospitals in the state while nearly 5,000 patients are in private hospitals,” said Dr G Srinivasa Rao, director of public health, Telangana. ....

A marriage ceremony in Hanmajipet village of Nizamabad district in Telangana became a Covid-19 super-spreader after 87 guests tested positive on Monday.
There were a total of 370 people at the wedding, all of whom have undergone a Covid test. All those who tested positive have been put in home isolation. An isolation centre has also been set up in the village. Health officials are in the process of testing and contact tracing. ....

Two more persons who returned to Telangana from the United Kingdom tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday and their samples have been sent for genome sequencing to check whether it is a new strain detected in the UK, a health official said.
With this, the total number of UK returnees who have tested positive for the disease in the state has risen to 18, he said. ....
