Telangana Corona News: Middle-class at risk during second wave, says official | Hyderabad News

Apart from upscaling testing and surveillance, the state health department has also increased vaccination centres and has ramped up vaccination in the recent days.
HYDERABAD: The middle and upper middle-class category of residents are more prone to contracting the virus during the ongoing second wave. Currently, around 5,000 patients are admitted at various private and corporate hospitals in the state, especially in and around the city, pushing bed availability to the brink.
“During the first wave, majority of the lower-class population already got affected. In the current wave, we are seeing more of middle-class and above getting affected. This is the reason we are seeing a large number of admissions in the private hospitals. Currently around 2,000 patients are admitted in government hospitals in the state while nearly 5,000 patients are in private hospitals,” said Dr G Srinivasa Rao, director of public health, Telangana.

Vax centres run out of Covaxin in Hyderabad; 2 jabs safe: Doctors | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: Desi Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin seems to be running out of stock in its own backyard – Hyderabad. Most vaccination centres in the city, be they government or private, don’t have stock. The reason: A sudden spike in demand for the indigenously developed vaccine.
Such has been the surge in demand for the vaccine that many of those waiting in queues for a Covaxin shot, have had to return home without getting the jab, especially after the vaccination drive was opened up to everyone over 45 years of age.
Right from making frantic calls to hospitals and friends in right places to reaching out to contacts through social media, people are leaving no stone unturned to get their hands on Covaxin.

Bengaluru police commissioner Kamal Pant told STOI: “During investigation of the drug case, a couple of witnesses made statements and we are examining them. Since the matter is being probed, details can’t be shared.”

City researchers part of global team to demystify Covid-19 virus origin | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: While there is consensus that Covid-19 virus evolved from the coronavirus present in bats, it still remains a mystery how the new virus has taken pandemic proportions. A team of international researchers, including those from the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) in Hyderabad and Kakatiya Medical College and MG Hospital in Warangal, have taken up research to demystify the proximal origin of the pandemic virus.
Researchers point out that the unique features of Covid-19 virus raise several questions about how it had evolved from the bats. They argue that Covid-19 is the seventh human coronavirus, but it is the first one that has caused the pandemic. While other human coronaviruses like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) disappeared without a pandemic, Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (MERS) is mostly endemic to the Arabian Peninsula, they said in their study published in the recent issue of Journal of Medical Virology.
