Earth Day Oregon outlines April 22 fundraising campaign effort
PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Earth Day Oregon has announced that it is celebrating Earth Day on Thursday, April 22 with a campaign that partners 52 Oregon-based organizations with an anticipated 150+ businesses in Oregon.
Earth Day Oregon is a statewide collaboration between sustainably-minded businesses and nonprofits. The campaign drives donation dollars to partner organizations by fostering and promoting fundraisers, sales, and virtual events at sustainably-focused businesses on April 22.
Businesses donate a flat amount, or create opportunities for community engagement by donating a percentage of business sales on Earth Day. Earth Day Oregon will collectively promote these fundraising opportunities leading up to April 22nd through its website (https://earthdayor.org/) and social media channels.

We're in bad times, but we've overcome them before

Our opinion: 'This too shall pass' appears in 2 Corinthians, resonates as an ancient Persian adage, and was spoken by Abraham Lincoln at a Wisconsin fair in 1859.
Portlanders are depressed and anxious. So are Oregonians and Americans and people worldwide.
A pandemic has taken 400,000 lives nationwide and 1,800 here in Oregon. We're hearing cries for racial equity on issues ranging from justice to health care to home ownership to education and so much more. The recession hit so fast, most of us were stunned. This summer's raging wildfires, right on the edge of the metro area, brought anxiety that this likely will be our new normal. And we survived the most polarizing, emotionally charged national election in our lifetime.

Brainstorming New Ideas For Improved Stormwater Infrastructure

Brainstorming New Ideas For Improved Stormwater Infrastructure
Planning how to address environment-impacting, water-infrastructure challenges — reducing stormwater runoff pollution, reducing sewer overflows, and protecting rivers and streams that serve as drinking water supplies for downstream towns — can be an intimidating task. A recent report from the Environment America Research & Policy Center cites many examples that can serve as beacons for municipalities large and small.
Learning From The Experience Of Others
For decision-makers confronted by stormwater, combined sewer systems, aging wastewater infrastructure, and other environmental challenges,
A Path To Cleaner Water identifies more than 20 idea-generating projects. It also includes more than 120 unique URL links to supporting information to enable interested parties to learn about them in greater detail. The combined coverage shares a wealth of insights to projects large and small — from small, stormwater solutions to multifaceted, billion-dollar projects that were a decade or more in the making. Examples include both gray and green infrastructure projects — many of them financed by combinations of local, state, and federal funding including Clean Water State Revolving Funds and Clean Water Act Section 319(h) funds.

Pamplin Media Group - Curse of 2020: First sewage overflow into Willamette River of the year

December 20 2020
With 11 days to go, Portland just misses the record of no combined sewage overflows in a single year.
It turns out, 2020 had one more piece of bad news — the first sewage overflow of the year into the Willamette River on Sunday, Dec. 20.
With 11 days left in the year, the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services said the weekend storm caused a combined sewer overflow (CSO) to the Willamette River. This is the first time sewage overflow has entered the river since August 2019. It is also the first such incident to affect the entire stretch of the river in Portland since April 2018.

Will 2020 Be The First Sewage-Free Year For The Willamette River?

Will 2020 Be The First Sewage-Free Year For The Willamette River?
In a year where good news seems scarce, Portland may reach a historic milestone for Willamette River water quality. The year 2020 is on track to be the first in modern history with zero combined sewer overflows to the river.
That’s a triumph of Portland’s investment in the Big Pipe Project, the $1.4B 20-year-long public infrastructure project that dramatically reduced such incidents and changed Portland’s relationship with its river. Overflows that used to be common - occurring about 50 times a rainy season, sometimes for days on end - now are rare. Environmental Services projects about four overflows per rainy season, a 94 percent reduction.
