Visual artist Robert Pruitt led a virtual lecture on April 6, the final speaker in an artist talk series hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder Arts and Art History Program. The lecture focused on his personal artwork, which addresses the Black experience in America through large-scale drawings and multi-media work.
Pruitt began his art career by creating paintings in college, but quickly developed a passion for drawings. In graduate school, Pruitt began to invest the majority of his creativity into large-scale graphite drawings. ....

Visual artist Sana Musasama led a virtual lecture March 9, hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder Arts and Art History Program. The lecture focused on her personal artwork, which addresses themes of feminism, culture, and community through a ceramics emphasis.
As an avid world traveler, Musasama gained her greatest artistic inspiration from seeing and experiencing different parts of the world. Her travels have spanned widely, from Cambodia to West Africa to Vietnam and beyond, and encompass a number of cultures, language, and lifestyles.
“I grew up learning about people from around the world, about different languages spoken, foods eaten, and clothes worn,” Musasama said. “I grew up with this love of difference instead of a fear of difference, so it wasn’t hard for me to begin traveling around the world thirty years ago.” ....

Visual artist Mark Salvatus led a virtual lecture on March 2, hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder Arts and Art History Program. The lecture focused on his personal artwork, which addresses themes of movement, cultures and the world through a mixed media approach.
Salvatus grew up in Lucban, a small farming town in the Philippines. He gained early exposure to art at the town’s Pahiyas Festival, a traditional celebration honoring the harvest. During the festival, houses are adorned in vibrant collections of fruits, vegetables, and other found materials, creating beautiful communal art installations. ....

Visual artist Suchitra Mattai led a virtual lecture on Feb. 10 hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder Arts and Art History Program. The lecture focused on her personal artwork, which addresses themes of diaspora, colonial narratives and landscape through a mixed media approach.
Suchitra Mattai began her art career with a focus on painting and quickly transitioned to experimentation with different mediums. Her works include aspects ranging from video projections to sculpture as well as craft processes such as knitting and crocheting. ....

CU Boulder alum shares stories of personal art endeavors

Visual artist Rebecca Vaughn led a virtual lecture Feb. 17 which was hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder Arts and Art History Program. The lecture focused on her personal artwork, which addresses themes of relationships, femininity, and love through a mixed media approach.
Vaughn’s interest in art started as a student at the University of Colorado Boulder. Vaughn was a French major who was not interested in art until impulsively deciding to take an elective sculpture course.
“I just wanted to try something fun and different,” Vaughn said. “I loved the energy in the studios late at night and the community. I loved trying something I was bad at.” ....
