'It cripples our industry:' Moffat County's ag producers push back against PAUSE initiative

Melody Villard doesn’t know whether to accuse the organizers of the PAUSE initiative of incompetence or resoluteness. Either way, if voters approved it, she believes the state’s agricultural industry as we know it would collapse.
“It’s either well thought out to cripple an industry,” Villard said, “or it’s not well thought out at all, and it cripples our industry.”
Villard is a Moffat County Commissioner, but she says “our” because she runs Villard Ranch, a Craig sheep operation that’s been in her family for a century. The ag industry is so rankled by ballot Initiative 16 that a coalition of livestock and farming groups protested before the state’s Title Board, stating that the name was a political catchphrase. The name, Protect Animals from U ....

Colorado Initiative 16 would tighten rules on treatment of livestock

The Pueblo Chieftain
Colorado ranchers and agricultural groups are staunchly opposing an initiative that could end up on the 2022 ballot that they say would drastically alter livestock production and crumble the agricultural economy in the state.
Initiative 16, dubbed Protecting Animals from Unnecessary Suffering and Exploitation, or PAUSE, by proponents, is intended to expand animal cruelty definitions to livestock. And while it is meant to protect cows, chickens, pigs and other livestock from abuse, opponents argue that the initiative would negatively impact the state’s $47 billion agricultural industry.
“I don t know what the people who wrote it, what their true objectives were, but from the producer’s side, it is devastating. If this thing were to pass, I truly feel that agriculture in the state of Colorado would go,” Pueblo County Stockmen’s Association board member Carl Beeman said.   ....

Baldwin named Colorado State Veterinarian

BROOMFIELD, Colo. – The Colorado Department of Agriculture announced that Dr. Maggie Baldwin has been named state veterinarian. In the role, Baldwin will manage CDA’s Animal Health division through planning, directing and executing all programs, policies and cooperative agreements with other governmental agencies.
Implementation of secure food supply plans and emergency response plans, enhanced animal disease traceability, education, and robust stakeholder engagement are among Baldwin’s priorities for the position. She is also making history as the first-ever female state veterinarian in Colorado.
“Time and again, Maggie has proved her mettle in crisis management, animal disease complexities, and excellence in service to the veterinary profession,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Kate Greenberg. “Coloradoans will benefit from the skill and dedication that Maggie brings to the people and animals of our state.” ....

A proposed ballot measure in Colorado is drawing the ire of Weld County commissioners and members of the state’s agriculture industry.
Initiative 16, which could appear on the November 2022 ballot, purports to expand state prohibitions against animal cruelty. However, commissioners in the rural county contend that it will harm farmers, ranchers, and other professions.
Weld County commissioners on Wednesday voted unanimously to oppose the measure.
Commissioner Pro-Tem Scott James described the initiative as bad policy that s clouded with spin.
“When people hear the spin on this initiative, it sounds good – who doesn’t want to end animal cruelty – however, the language being used to tug at voter’s heartstrings is hollow when you actually read the verbiage proposed and educate yourself on what it is really aiming to accomp ....
