Stricter gun laws in Colorado, with local control, another step closer

Colorado Senate Democrats Tuesday, over strong objections from the Republican minority, passed Senate Bill 256, a bill that lifts the state s ban on stricter gun laws for cities and counties.
The final vote along party lines, 19-15, with one Democrat absent, sent the measure to the state House for consideration.
Senate Majority Leader Steve Fenberg, D-Boulder, said he started working on the bill before the March 22 King Soopers shooting in south Boulder, and just after a Boulder district court judge tossed a local ordinance banning assault weapons within city limits.
I don t think it s right that some cities can do this and some cannot, he said, referring to a similar Denver ordinance banning firearms that was upheld by the state Supreme Court,  due to it being an issue of mixed state and local concern. Guns play a different role in everyone s life, he acknowledged. For some, guns are normal part of life while others may not have ever seen one. ....

GUEST COLUMN: Family budgets beset by politician's plans

It’s never a good sign for your family budget when the word “fee” appears 485 times in a bill. Colorado Senate Democrats are using that word to sell a massive tax increase dressed up as an infrastructure plan. Senate Bill 21-260 is nearly 200 pages long, creates four departments of government called “enterprises,” is loaded with big thoughts about “climate justice,” and would cost Colorado taxpayers $5.3 billion.
There is no doubt Colorado needs to upgrade its roads and bridges. You can’t drive in El Paso County without swerving around potholes. Now that the pandemic appears to have crossed a tipping point, wait times are building again to get from Colorado Springs to Denver. ....

POINT | Protect environment; don't wreck economy

Ray Scott
America’s conversation about climate change typically offers two options. One is full governmental control and the American economy’s destruction. Legislation like Colorado Senate Bill 21-200, which is currently making its way through the General Assembly, is of that kind. The other option is denial.
There must be a better way. It is time we promote policies that will protect the environment without destroying the economy.
Investment in nuclear energy is one good possibility. Nuclear energy’s carbon footprint is next to zero, and it requires 360 times less land to produce the same energy output as solar. The Energy Information Administration shows that nuclear is by far the most reliable energy source, operating at full capacity 92.5% of the time in 2020. In contrast, wind and solar operated at full capacity 35.4% and 24.9% of the time, respectively. Nuclear energy produces the same amount of America’s energy as all other renewable energy ....

POINT/COUNTER: Should state employees be able to share immigrant information with ICE?

Point: John Cooke
We have a crisis at our southern border. Detention facilities are operating at over 100% capacity, and the pictures taken by Republican senators who visited reveal abysmal conditions. Last week, children were filmed being thrown over a 10-foot wall.
Now, overwhelmed with the surge, the Biden administration is releasing many of those illegally crossing the border into the interior of the country. Instead of addressing the crisis, Democrat Sen. Julie Gonzales thinks Colorado should further cripple the ability of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to identify lawbreakers. Her bill, “Concerning Measures to Protect Personal Identifying Information Kept by State Agencies,” prohibits state agency employees from sharing personal information, most importantly immigration status, with federal agencies like ICE. ....
