Texas lawmakers are back in Austin Thursday after wrapping up the 87th regular legislative session just over a month ago. Gov. Greg Abbott called a special session to work on what he considers unfinished business.
The 11-item
agenda he released on Wednesday includes a slew of Republican priorities. Among them are measures to expand cash bail, constrain how educators talk about racism in the classroom, and bar transgender students from playing on school sports teams that align with their gender identity. ....

The Texas House is starting off on a new foot on the contentious elections proposal that blew up the regular legislative session.
As a special session reviving the Republican-priority bill got underway Thursday, there were ample signs that the lower chamber was taking a fresh approach to the legislation, at least procedurally. The bill has a new author who is moving early to get colleagues’ input, and it is going through a new committee that House Speaker Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont, says he created to bring more diverse perspectives to the issue. ....

Jul. 8 New voting bills and political tension hung over the first day of the special legislative session as lawmakers returned to Austin to take up an agenda packed with conservative priorities.
The floor proceedings in both chambers were relatively quick as the Senate and House of Representatives gaveled in, marking the start of the 30-day session where lawmakers will consider topics set by Abbott such as election integrity, border security, critical race theory and transgender students participation on sports teams matching their gender identity. ....
