A storm on April 23, 1956, was one such time. Parts of Corpus Christi received 8 inches of rain, Portland received 9.25 inches, Taft 11.5 inches and outer areas of San Patricio County recorded 14 inches. Downtown Corpus Christi received so much rainfall that the flood control pumping system became overwhelmed, pumping water at the rate of 1,125,000 gallons a minute. Stores along Chaparral Street reported 4 to 6 inches of standing water inside their buildings. ....
