Empower teachers to teach sexuality education

Empower teachers to teach sexuality education
With 18,000 Malaysian teenagers becoming pregnant every year, effective sexuality education cannot be delayed.
IN the past week, a teacher received backlash for allegedly making rape jokes while explaining sexual harassment. This issue has triggered police reports, a cascade of strong public reactions from citizens and the civil society, and an important question: Was the teacher well equipped to teach sexuality education in the first place?
To answer this question, we must understand the landscape of sexuality education in Malaysia and the challenges faced by teachers before turning to practical solutions.
“Sex education”, “sexual education” and “sexuality education” are used interchangeably to denote an age-appropriate and culturally-relevant approach to teaching about sex and relationships with scientifically accurate, realistic and non–judgmental information.

A rise in COVID-19 infections in Southeast Asia, despite the rollout of mass-vaccination campaigns, points to gaps in public health systems in the region and the lack of proper follow-up measures in relation to existing patients and suspected cases, experts said.
While vaccinations will help curb the spread of the virus, public health experts said the inoculation drives must be complemented by mass testing, contact tracing, quarantining and continuous enforcement of strict health protocols.

Rising above the challenges

PETALING JAYA: With Covid-19 infections on the uptick again, the focus is back on the number of tests being carried out in the country.
Based on Health Ministry statistics, Malaysia conducted an average of 44,253 RT-PCR and RTK-Ag tests a day from March 4 to April 16.
The RTK-Ag tests, however, do not include those conducted by the Social Security Organisation (Socso).
These two tests – reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and antigen rapid test kit (RTK-Ag) – are the two known popular Covid-19 tests available and used by health authorities worldwide to detect the virus.
In RT-PCR testing data released by the ministry, it was revealed that the maximum testing capacity for such tests is at 80,755 with an estimated 35,061 tests conducted on April 16.

KUALA LUMPUR (April 8): Vaccine supplies, vaccine confidence and a "virus variant strategy" are three challenges ASEAN will have to manage in the short and medium term, according to independent health policy specialist Dr Khor Swee Kheng.
According to the health expert, as of the 5th of April 2021, Malaysia’s vaccination rate is the third highest in ASEAN with 1.57% of the total population receiving at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This is behind Singapore at 17.95% and Indonesia at 3.16%. Cambodia is just behind Malaysia at 1.37%, whereas the rest of the Philippines, Lao PDR, Thailand, Brunei and Vietnam have vaccinated less than 1% of their populations.

Cover Story: After a year of MCO, recovery in sight

EXACTLY a year ago, there were whispers swirling that a lockdown would soon be imposed on the country, owing to the rising number of Covid-19 infections. Supermarket shelves were quickly emptied of daily necessities such as rice, eggs, tinned food and cooking oil.
Then on March 18, 2020, the first Movement Control Order (MCO) was imposed and there was much uncertainty among the public and business community over what would happen next.
One year on, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has taken 1,177 lives and infected 314,989 people in the country (as at March 10). Despite the grim circumstances, many see light at the end of the tunnel as Malaysia rolls out its National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NCIP).
