Washington D.C., May 24, 2020 (PAHO) World No-Tobacco Day Awards for 2021 in the Americas have been awarded to three Costa Rican institutions, the ministries of health in Saint Lucia and Paraguay, the Uruguayan National Resource Fund, two California cities, and a Brazilian doctor.
The winners, selected by the World Health Organization (WHO) from nominations received in response to a public call, achieved key advances in tobacco control in their countries. The awards are part of global tobacco control efforts recognized on World No-Tobacco Day every year. ....

17 de mayo de 2021, 7:28San José, May 17 (Prensa Latina) President Carlos Alvarado claimed that at least 3.5 million Costa Ricans will be vaccinated this year against Covid-19, achieving the so-called flock immunity .
I want to talk to you about Covid-19 vaccination, which is one of the country´s key missions. That´s why we are conducting an accelerated and massive plan to vaccinate at least 3.5 million people this year, Alvarado wrote and published on social media.
The president specified the project includes direct action by the State and support by private sector and civil society organizations. ....

Caja asks government to impose new Covid measures


At this time, no new measures have been announced.
The CCSS says it can no longer offer timely and proper care to some individuals due to the saturation of ICU beds by Covid-19 patients.
Their press release reads, in part, as follows:
The executives expressed their deep concern about the critical situation that CCSS hospitals are currently facing due to the exponential growth of COVID-19 cases. In addition to this, care is maintained for other pathologies that require hospitalization both in intensive care units and in other internment rooms.
The Board of Directors emphasized that the CCSS has made and continues to carry out an extraordinary effort to expand hospital capacity and recognizes that health personnel have totally devoted themselves to the care of this health emergency; they are exhausted, but they maintain the commitment intact. ....

Costa Rican government details new Covid measures


We detailed these changes yesterday. Below is the Presidency’s full press release of the new restrictions:

Faced with the critical national emergency situation facing the country, the Government of the Republic took the decision to carry out a closure of commercial establishments, except for the list of exceptions of essential establishments, from Monday, May 3 to Sunday, May 9 in the cantons of the Central Region.
These establishments may operate in the non-face-to-face modality of public through home or self-service service. Premises in the rest of the country will not be affected by closures.
In addition, the vehicle restriction by license plates during the week throughout the month of May will be applied in the cantons of the Central Region in the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. This will not affect the other regions of the country. ....
