Taiwan chides China for using vaccines as political tool

Taiwan chides China for using vaccines as political tool
13 May 2021, 20:37 GMT+10
Taipei [Taiwan], May 13 (ANI): Taiwan has condemned the Chinese government for using vaccines as a political tool to pressure the Tapei s diplomatic allies to switch allegiance after Honduras said it is mulling the possibility of opening a trade office in China in a bid to acquire COVID-19 vaccines.
In a televised speech on Tuesday, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said his government was willing to do whatever was necessary to help its people during the global pandemic, Focus Taiwan reported. Honduras does not have formal relations with China.
If necessary, the Honduran government would open a trade office in China because it is in the best interest of the Honduran people, he had said. ....

Costa Rica shines in World Press Freedom Index

The annual report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said Tuesday that journalism was at least partly blocked in nearly three-quarters of the 180 countries surveyed.
Its World Press Freedom Index found 73 countries “totally blocked or seriously impeded” journalism, while it was “constrained” in 59 others, adding that many governments had used the pandemic to worsen repression.
“Journalism is the best vaccine against disinformation,” RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, its production and distribution are too often blocked by political, economic, technological and, sometimes, even cultural factors.”
Eritrea, North Korea, Turkmenistan, China and Djibouti fared worst overall in this year’s RSF ranking. ....

EU regulator 'firmly convinced' AstraZeneca jab benefits outweigh risks -

The EU’s medicines regulator said Tuesday it was “firmly convinced” the benefits of AstraZeneca’s jab outweigh potential risks, insisting there was no evidence linking the vaccine to blood clots after a host of nations suspended the shot over health fears.
The suspensions have led to intense debate over whether it was prudent to put AstraZeneca inoculations on hold just as vaccination campaigns begin to gather pace in many countries.
Experts at both the World Health Organization and the European Medicines Agency are meeting Tuesday to discuss the vaccine, with the European organisation expected to publish conclusions Thursday.
While millions of doses of the vaccine developed with Oxford University have been administered, small numbers of people have developed blood clots, prompting countries including the European Union’s three largest nations Germany, France and Italy to suspend injections. ....
